What Are Online Group Tutoring Classes Really Like? (A Parent's Guide)
If you're looking for extra support for your child, you might be wondering: does online tutoring actually work?
That's a completely fair question.
For many families, "online learning" brings back memories of COVID home schooling. Stressed parents. Exhausted teachers. Kids staring at muted screens. It was hard for everyone.
But online tutoring that's been purposefully designed for children? That's a completely different experience.
This guide walks you through exactly what happens in a Wise Owl Education online group session; and why it works so well for so many kids, including those with ADHD, Dyslexia, ASD, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia.
Why Online Group Tutoring Works So Well
At Wise Owl Education, our small online groups are designed to give students the support, connection and confidence they often don’t get in larger classroom settings.
Students are able to:
ask questions without feeling embarrassed
learn in smaller, manageable steps
participate in engaging activities
build confidence alongside peers
receive encouragement and guidance throughout the session
The smaller group setting means tutors can actually get to know each child — how they learn, what they struggle with, and what helps them succeed.
Online group tutoring with Wise Owl is different:
Small groups — your child is seen and heard, not lost in the crowd
Familiar routine — predictable sessions that feel safe, especially for anxious kids
Less overwhelming — no noisy rooms, no sensory overload, feel comfortable in their own space
Tech-friendly — All kids enjoy learning online
No school run — just log in from home
Children learn best when they feel safe and supported. Everything we do is built around that.
What Happens in a Wise Owl Online Session
First Up. A Genuine Chat
We never dive straight into learning.
Every session starts with a few minutes of real conversation.
How was the birthday party? Did the footy match get rained out? How did the school carnival go?
This isn't just small talk. It matters.
Kids can't learn well when they feel rushed or unsettled. Taking time to connect, every single session, helps children feel comfortable, safe, and ready to learn.
For children who feel anxious in group settings, this often becomes one of their favourite parts of the week.
Then We Play a Warm-Up Game
Nobody likes jumping straight into "serious work".
So we don't.
A quick warm-up game helps kids settle in, wake up their brains, and get comfortable participating. It also makes sessions genuinely fun which is really important for children who've started to dread learning.
Warm-ups might be quiz games, visual challenges, movement activities, or something silly and collaborative. It changes based on the group.
We Always Review Before Moving On
Before we introduce anything new, we go back over what students already know.
This is deliberate.
When a child thinks "Oh... I remember this! I can do this!" that moment of confidence is everything. It's what makes them willing to try something harder.
Revisiting previous learning isn't going backwards. It's what makes moving forwards possible.
Movement Breaks - Because Kids Aren't Robots
Children are not built to sit still for an hour.
Especially kids with ADHD or other learning differences.
That's why we build movement breaks into every session. Depending on the group, that might be a quick stretch, a scavenger hunt around the house, a silly dance challenge, or a brain-break game.
Sometimes things get a bit giggly. That's completely fine.
These breaks aren't wasted time, they're what helps kids focus for the rest of the session.
Activities Change Regularly
We never spend a whole session doing the same thing.
Learning is broken into shorter chunks (5 to 10 minutes per activity, depending on age) that switch between different types of activities; visual tasks, discussion, games, hands-on activities, and independent work.
This keeps kids engaged and supports different learning styles.
Every group is different, so every session is adapted to suit the children in the room, their ages, their needs, their confidence levels, and their goals.
Learning Through Games: Because Fun and Learning Aren't Opposites
Here's something we believe strongly: when a child is having fun, they learn more.
That's not just a nice idea, it's backed by research. Gamified learning uses games, challenges, points, and rewards to make learning feel exciting rather than like a chore. And it works especially well for children who've started to associate school with stress or failure.
In our sessions, gamified learning might look like a team quiz where students earn points together, a timed spelling challenge, a mystery-solving activity built around maths skills, or a competitive (but friendly!) reading game.
The magic is what happens underneath. While kids are focused on winning or solving or collaborating, they're also practising real skills: reading, writing, problem-solving, maths without the anxiety that often gets in the way.
Many children leave a session without realising how much they actually did.
That's exactly the point.
We Teach in Stages: No One Is Left to "Just Figure It Out"
This is one of the most important things we do.
We use a three-step teaching approach:
Step 1 — Watch me do it. The tutor models the skill clearly, talking through each step out loud.
Step 2 — Let's do it together. Students practise with full support. No one is expected to manage alone yet.
Step 3 — Now you try. Students have a go independently, with the tutor close by if needed.
This approach takes the pressure off completely. Kids always know what's coming next, and they're never thrown in the deep end.
For children who've struggled in the past, this can make a really big difference.
Is This Really Different From COVID Home Learning?
Yes. Completely.
COVID home schooling was an emergency. Schools had days to move everything online. Teachers were doing their best under impossible circumstances. Parents were juggling work and supervising three kids at once. Nobody was okay.
Wise Owl's online classes were built for online from the very beginning. They are not a classroom experience squeezed onto a screen.
That means:
Small groups designed for online engagement
Sessions paced to avoid screen fatigue
Experienced educators who know how to teach online, not just deliver content
Warm, interactive sessions where every child is expected to participate
Many parents are genuinely surprised by how much their child enjoys it.
Is Online Group Tutoring Right for Your Child?
It tends to work really well for children who:
Feel lost or overwhelmed in big classroom settings
Need extra support with reading, writing, or maths
Like routine and knowing what to expect
Have lost confidence after finding school hard
Have a diagnosis of ADHD, Dyslexia, ASD, Dysgraphia, or Dyscalculia
Learn well through games and interaction
Enjoy using technology
And for parents — no afternoon traffic. No cross-town school run. No juggling drop-offs. Just log in from home, and your child is supported.
Questions Parents Often Ask
What ages do you cater to? We support primary and high school students. Get in touch and we'll help you find the right fit for your child.
How many kids are in each class? We keep groups small so every child gets attention and feels included. All classes have a maximum of 6 students, working at the same ability level.
My child has ADHD and has trouble focusing. Will this actually work? This is the question we hear most often.
Our sessions are specifically designed with this in mind. Movement breaks, frequent activity changes, and a warm and engaging structure help neurodivergent learners stay focused and feel successful. Some of our most engaged students are the ones whose parents were most worried.
What subjects do you cover? Visit wiseowleducation.com.au for current programs.
Does my child need me to sit with them? Most children can join independently once they're settled in. You don’t need to sit with them but you are welcome to!
The Bottom Line
Online group tutoring done well, is not a second-best option. For many children, especially those who've found traditional classrooms difficult, it's actually the environment where they finally start to shine.
At Wise Owl Education, we're not just here to get through content. We want your child to feel capable, included, and genuinely excited about learning.
Because when a child feels safe and supported, the learning takes care of itself.
