How to Use FREE Easter Decodable Readers in Your Classroom

Easter is around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with some egg-cellent (sorry, had to) FREE Easter-themed decodable readers! 🐣

These readers are perfect for 1:1 teaching, small group lessons, and whole class instruction. Let’s dive into some simple ways you can use them in your classroom - without adding extra work to your already overflowing to-do list.

1:1 Teaching – Tailored Support for Struggling Readers

Got a student who needs a little extra support with reading? These decodable readers are perfect for structured, confidence-building practice.

These readers are designed so that you can easily hand this task to your EA or a parent helper. You could also send them home for home practise.

You can split these activities over more than one lesson.

How to use them:

✅Ask the student to practise saying their sounds using the sounds chart.

✅ Model blending and segmenting unfamiliar words.

✅ Ask the student to have a go at reading the fluency chart.

✅Model reading the high frequency words.

✅ With the student to highlight or underline sounds that are not decodable in the high frequency words and discuss why.

✅Over the next one to three students, ask the student to read the story to you out loud. You may even like to ask them to read the story once silently before reading aloud, to give them time to practise. (This is especially good for shy, or reluctant readers).

✅Complete the comprehension questions in the back of the book. You can choose to do this orally or written.

Small Group Lessons – Build Fluency & Confidence Together

Working with a group of 3–6 students? These readers are a great tool for small group instruction.

How to use them:

As well as these activities below don't forget to review sounds, fluency chart, and high frequency words.

✅ Assign roles: One student can be the “word detective” (finding tricky words), another can be the “fluency checker” (listening for smooth reading).

✅ Use partner reading—students take turns reading aloud to each other.

✅ Incorporate comprehension questions after reading. (Use the comprehension questions at the end of the of the story!).

Bonus tip: Add a writing extension by asking students to write their own alternative ending to the story!

✅ Choral reading: Read together as a class to build confidence.

✅ Written comprehension: Ask students to answer comprehension questions in their writing books.

✅ Act it out! Let students take on roles from the story and perform a mini-play.

🔹 Bonus tip:Easter Egg Hunt Twist! Write decodable words from the story on Easter egg cutouts and hide them around the room. Students have to find and read their word before placing it in a sentence.
